Shades of Color
Through the study of color psychology, it has been determined that color can affect people's emotions differently. The slightly obvious application of this theory explains that the color red, which is one of passion, has a different effect on people than green, which is a color that strikes associations with nature and serenity. In a more detailed look at color psychology, it is revealed that even in terms of shades of particular colors, different associations, impressions and emotions can be experienced.
Red is generally a color that evokes a noticeable response, but different shades of red have different associations and effects. Light red for example, represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity and love. Pink also has an association with love, but it also has an association with femininity and friendship. Dark red is a shade with more powerful association. Dark red can be connected to power of will, rage, anger, leadership, courage and wrath.
Orange is a color filled with positive and emotionally uplifting effects. The meaning of different shades of orange can diverge from these meanings though. Dark orange has the possible association of deceit and distrust. Red-orange represents desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination and aggression. A gold-like shade of orange has an association with prestige, wisdom and wealth.
In general, yellow is a positive color associated with happiness, joy and energy. A dull yellow however, can represent caution, decay, sickness and at times jealousy. A light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness and other more positive feelings.
Green, the color most commonly associated with harmony, peace and growth has different meanings depending on shade. Dark green is associated with ambition, along with the negative associations of greed and jealousy. Yellow-green can relate to sickness and cowardice. Aqua green has the positive association of healing and protection. Olive green is a color that has a traditional meaning of peace.
Blue, the color of the ocean and sky is generally associated with many positive things. Symbols such as trust, loyalty and wisdom are all psychologically associated with blue and other symbols such as faith and heaven are included in this association. Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility and softness. Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity and seriousness and can be said to be a more depressing color than lighter shades of blue.
Purple is a color that has a variety of mental associations and psychological effects. It can be associated with royalty, power, luxury and ambition. It also is associated with wisdom, dignity, mystery and magic. Light shades of purple can evoke emotions of romance and nostalgia. Dark purple has a very different effect. It can evoke emotions of gloom and sadness; it can also harness feelings of frustration.
